To use it as a colander, put it either in the sink or hold the handle to empty pasta or vegetables or rinse fresh fruits and salad leaves. The smart piece comes when it comes time to dry your salad... you simply turn the handle to unlock it, then spin the frame and handle to sit vertically, with the handy little non-slip "foot" at the bottom. To set it spins, pump the handle up and down a few times and off it goes impressively and spins quickly to shake off excess water and dry the food thoroughly. To stop, press and hold the handle.
